What Every Woman Needs to Know About Hormones

1. Your period tells you more than you think.

She’s your monthly report card! Changes in your cycle, missed or consistently irregular periods can be signs that something else is going on in your body. Time to dig deeper gal!

2. You shouldn't have to plan your life around period pain.

Like, at all! Pain that impacts your life in any way deserves attention. You don't have to just push through it and nothing about it can be fobbed off as ‘normal’ (albeit unfortunately common)!

3. Being on the pill masks what’s happening with your hormones.

The pill can be a great option for contraception and managing certain symptoms but does nothing to ‘fix’ your hormonal issues - it simply bandaids them by shutting off your natural hormonal fluctuations. Understanding what your contraception does & why you’re experiencing symptoms in the first place can help you make informed decisions about your body.

4. On that, the bleed you get on the pill isn’t a period

It’s actually just a withdrawal bleed from the synthetic hormones stopping when you take the sugar pill!

5. Acne almost always isn’t a skincare problem.

You can have the best skincare routine in the world and still experience breakouts. There’s a myriad of other factors (like hormonal changes, gut health, stress…) that can all play a role.

6. You can only fall pregnant 6 days of your menstrual cycle.

Ovulation is the only time you will fall pregnant during your entire menstrual cycle. This timing is different for each person (and your period tracking app is likely inaccurate!). Fertile window = 5 days prior + 24 hours after ovulation

7. Stress can show up in your cycle too.

Stress isn't just something that affects your mind. Physical and emotional stress can influence the communication between your brain and ovaries, sometimes delaying ovulation or causing your period to become irregular or disappear.

8. Not everyone has a 28 day cycle.

A healthy menstrual cycle is regular and can fall between 24-35 days. The idea that everyone should have a perfect 28 day cycle is false! Cycle length varies between people, and it’s the overall pattern/any changes that matter.

9. You don't have to accept feeling terrible before your period.

Severe mood changes or physical symptoms that affect your everyday life deserve further investigation and support. Not just something that should be fobbed off as ‘part of being a woman’

10. The most important!! You know your body best and your symptoms deserve to be taken seriously.

You shouldn't have to wait until you're trying to conceive, or until a symptom becomes unbearable, to ask questions about your hormones. If something doesn't feel right, you're allowed to seek answers, ask for further investigation and advocate for yourself. You deserve more!!
